Rod Sedgwick’s review published on Letterboxd:
The inspiration for Terry Gilliam's 'Twelve Monkey's' lies in this 1962 short film from Chris Marker. La jetée is a fascinating ode to 'moving pictures' which collages still monochrome photographs to create a visual fluidity not unlike our regular way of watching film. This technique is able to tell it's dystopian/post-apocalyptic tale of time-travel without the constraints of budget.
What it contains is a haunting tale of longing for times past, fleeting moments of romance and escape from the 'now', swept up in a score that's both hauntingly melancholic yet laced with wonder.
In La jetée's brief 26 minutes we experience the joys of experimental and influential cinema at it's most effective and affecting.
