    End of Summer

    Antarctica is a subject that should be endlessly interesting, but we've all seen so many photos and videos of it that it's hard to really see it; you just file the images away under "Antarctica" in your mental filing cabinet and tune out.

    This film succeeded at making me really see Antarctica. The haunting music makes it feel new again. So did the decision to film it on Super 8: it seems like it should make the footage look old, but it really makes it feel more urgent somehow.

    I really like the presentational nature of it--both literally and figuratively, there's a lot of looking at the camera in this movie. It feels like a music video, even before it turns into one.

    I put off watching this on Mubi until the last minute. I was worried that it would be a massive disappointment after A Bread Factory. "I've seen plenty family dramas," I kept thinking, "but I've never seen anything like Bread Factory.

    Hey, I have an idea. Let's watch De Niro's "you talking to me?" scene in Taxi Driver.

    Done? Okay, let's talk about it. Notice how slow it is? Notice how you see Travis Bickle fumble with the gun? Notice how you're seeing him put on this persona, trying to figure out how it fits? Notice how he gets serious and then plays it for laughs and then gets serious again, suddenly a little surprised at his seriousness? DO YOU NOTICE…
