Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom ★★★½

The performances of Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman, are really powerful, especially Boseman who gives probably the best performance of his career. His performance here is incredibly dynamic, equally fascinating, funny and deeply tragic. It's really a shame to have lost Chadwick but with performances like these I hope his legacy is for eternity.

As for the film, technically it is very well done, the period adaptation, costumes, music and cinematography are all very good. In addition, there are some very powerful and moving moments and dialogues. My main problem with the film is that since it is an adapted play, there are several moments that the film seems more like a play than a movie, which are full of exposition which makes you lose your interest in some parts of the film.
