    ★★½

Charlie Hunnam has GOT to be the blandest actor currently working, and coupled with a tedious script that can summon no suspense, this 240-minute movie felt like 4 hours.

Currently on Showtime, this is the sort of quiet little English film that doesn't get seen, but should. Jim Broadbent is Tony Webster, an elderly shopkeeper who is suddenly informed that his first love's mother has willed him a diary. The action moves between Tony today and Tony the young Cambridge student--played by Billy Howle, soon to be seen with Saoirse Ronan in "On Chesil Beach"--as he struggles to procure the diary, reunite with his beloved Veronica (Charlotte Rampling) and find and ending that makes sense. Emily Mortimer plays Veronica's mother.

I realize "masterpiece" is an overused word. However.....

Openly gay teen and his parents travel from California to Nebraska for a family reunion. Gay teen wants to come out to the family. Parents think it's a bad idea. You're preppred for a touching coming- our tale. And then, like "Psycho," this movie takes off in a very different, VERY creepy direction. Still trying to shake the icky feeling.
