Ronniessss Arijit Mukherjee’s review published on Letterboxd:
It is the tough, relentless intensity of the movie that works for this prison crime drama. David Mackenzie's edgy direction, the script by Jonathan Asser with its unpredictable characters and the dynamics of their relationships, the appropriateness of the cinematography, the editing (special mention here: the two brilliant metaphorical shots of the turnstile)- everything works for the movie.
But what takes this movie to an unprecedented level of class is the performances of the entire cast, especially Jack O'Connell and Ben Mendelsohn. I would be pretty surprised if young O'Connell does not become the next big thing coming from the U.K. (If I'm not mistaken, he already is.)
An intense prison drama that ultimately oozes compassion, 'Starred up' stays with you because of its acting and direction. It is also one of those films that will make you take notice of the enormous amount of talent existing in Britain.
