“Peckinpah’s Sporting Goods” 😂
A good time was had by all.
Think this is my favourite Wong Kar-Wai film. Tony Leung is one of the best looking people I’ve ever laid eyes on which is somehow less distracting here than in In The Mood for Love or Chungking Express. He’s maybe allowed to be a little more interesting in this one. Less obviously appealing. More troubled and toxic.
Loved all the scenes of him at work in various low-paid jobs and that final shot of him getting the train out of Taipei is just gorgeous and sad and hopeful all at once.
This is a strong and damning film about the landlord class. It would make a great double-bill with Hal Ashby’s The Landlord.
Swanson entertains himself by believing that not only could he do job but he could excel at any job. Be it gardening, bartending, taxi-driving or dish-washing. Why does everyone else complain, he thinks. This isn’t any harder than landlording.
The camera rarely strays from Tim Heidecker’s face and we barely see any of the locations beyond his direct…
