    Chimes at Midnight

Welles' compression of two of Shakespeare's plays (plus a bit of a third) into one single movie is never less than a marvel. Hilarious, moving, confounding, it's the full five course meal of a movie.

OK, sure, the post-dubbed sound might be a distraction -- lip-synch is occasionally off and in a couple of places it's just plain non-existent, and I guess I can see that some folks could be distracted by it. And to those folks I have a message. Get over it.

    Keep the Lights On

A flabby and lifeless look at a more than usually dysfunctional relationship -- one guy's a crackhead, the other is his human doormat. It never comes alive as anything but a bunch of cliches.

Handsomely produced, shockingly predictable, one of Scorsese's very very lowest points, a cheesy Shyamalanian knockoff that dares to appropriate Holocaust imagery in a particularly vulgar attempt at significance.

A tense and lively drama about a romantic triangle gone rather hideously wrong. Handsomely produced and acted, it easily outclasses anything that Hitchcock was doing at the same time in his career.
