Shiraishi has a knack for the absurd, I just wish he would have leaned into it more here. It doesn't quite escape the shadow of the "torture porn" boom but I respect where he was coming from. There’s an undercurrent of horny but he’s holding back. Even some of my own fetishes that make some cameos in here just end up mostly falling flat for me. Feels kinda like a misunderstood gem, kinda like a sleazy sadistic exploitation film, but never quite sleazy enough and with never quite enough substance to be misunderstood in the first place.

Incredible work of craftsmanship, from the rotting carcasses to the surreal industrial hellscapes to all the clanging and skittering and buzzing and ululating and sloshing you could ever ask for. The sound design is disgustingly luxurious and the visuals are varied and intricate and hideous and sometimes even beautiful and it all comes together like the most immaculately manicured nails scraping against an infernal chalkboard. Can’t look away for even a second. This is not a place of honor.
