Wow, that’s a hard one for me to rate!
On the one hand, it’s fantastically well made and immensely gripping – on the other hand, if you’re not familiar with the story (or chose to ignore it), it’s really just an exploitation film in a historical setting.
And while i can appreciate both aspects of it, i did not have a good time watching it. It’s harrowing, it’s shocking, it’s brutal. In a sense it’s faithful to “the book” – but that alone does not make for a good movie.
The thing is, had this film not been about Jesus Christ, it would just be an above average grindhouse film.
