Decent animated film here. I’ve been very interested in this movie for over a decade at this point, as I remember seeing the trailer before another movie (I believe Up) in theaters when this was coming out in 2009. The art style and apocalyptic setting really intrigued me back then, and still does really. There is a definite charm with this film that comes from a place of pure creativity. This meant that although the plot wasn’t always perfectly paced,…

  • I Know What You Did Last Summer

I Know What You Did Last Summer

I Know What You Did Last Summer is a fun, but very flawed slasher film. For the first two acts of this film I was actually really invested in the story, characters and mystery of the film. The third act...well we’ll get there. First what I like. The characters, you actually care about them. The film does a smart thing, the first twenty minutes or so is really light and fluffy. This allowed for the characters to be properly developed…

  • Vampires vs. the Bronx

    Vampires vs. the Bronx

Vanpires Vs. The Bronx, isn’t something we haven’t seen before. But it is a fun, Halloween movie. The simple slasher premise works surprisingly well when put into the Bronx location. The three main kids have terrific chemistry, you really buy that they have grown up and been through a lot together. Most of the horror stuff is pretty effective, from a filmmaking perspective it’s pretty solid. I have a few issues however. The gentrification theme, while being very well handled…

  • Monkeyshines, No. 1

    Monkeyshines, No. 1

Another film I watched for my film lit class. This one gets a slight downgrade because you absolutely cannot tell what it’s supposed to be.

  • Bill & Ted Face the Music

Bill & Ted Face the Music

It was...good. Way better than two not nearly as good as one. 3.5 feels comfortable rating wise right now. It’s great to be seeing a new release and this was a fun one.

  • The Call of the Wild

    The Call of the Wild

This is exactly the type of movie I needed to watch tonight. A fun adventure that doesn't necessarily leave a big impact on you, but is pretty heartwarming in the moment. I actually missed out on this one in theaters. I've mentioned in some of my previous reviews that I have a small movie theater in my town that typically plays only one movie a week for two nights only. I was going to see this with a few friends…

  • Hotel for Dogs

    Hotel for Dogs

So much like Aliens in the Attic this is a movie from my childhood I decided to rewatch today. So even if this film isn’t necessarily great, I will always have immense nostalgia and affection towards it. And while I don’t think Hotel for Dogs is a GREAT movie, I do think for its target audience it actually holds up REALLY well. It has definitely aged better than some other children’s movies from this time. Look, if you are looking…

Funny stuff. I don’t have much to say, however I don’t really think this film requires much to be said about it. It’s just fun.

  • Jersey Boys

    Jersey Boys

I really enjoyed this film. Despite some pretty egregious pacing issues and Clint Eastwood’s lackluster direction, I actually think that Jersey Boys is a pretty good movie. Sure it’s not really anything super special, but it’s engaging to watch. All the musical numbers are absolutely terrific, and the vocal performances from all the actors are outstanding. I would be confused, to say the least, if anyone had a problem with the singing in this movie. But like I said the…

  • Happy as Lazzaro

    Happy as Lazzaro

This isn’t a great movie in my opinion, but it is indeed a good one. It doesn’t really have much to offer outside of it’s beautiful cinematography and sound design, and it’s excellent acting. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a super relaxing film and definitely worth the watch, but I think you could get away with throwing it on in the background while you do something else and still get the full experience. It’s style over substance and it wears…

  • The Most Dangerous Game

    The Most Dangerous Game

Cool, I wasn’t aware that there was a movie adaptation of this. I read and analyzed the short story that this film is based on in my LA class at school a few months ago and since than it’s been one of my favorite short stories. I was pretty stoked to find out that this film exists, as for my thoughts...not bad. The first half is really lame if I’m honest, not much really happens outside of some outdated racist…

  • Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool

Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool

Really enjoyed the first hour, but goddamn if this isn’t the most repetitive documentary I’ve ever seen. Look, Jazz is my favorite music genre and Miles Davis is a legend. If you have any interest in learning more about one of the greatest jazz musicians that has ever lived, this is certainly worth the watch. I’m glad I watched it. Just be warned that after the amazing first hour this gets stale really fast. The last thirty minutes in particular drag on and on.
