Divine Divas

Divine Divas ★★★½

A wholeheartedly sympathetic tribute to a pioneer generation of trans artists that perhaps bites more than it could chew in trying to be an all-encompassing variant of both the revisionist character-driven doc á la the 'Up' series, and the larger-than-life exuberance of something like 'Paris is Burning'. Ultimately, its generous indulgence in trying to give its subject matters an equal amount of screen-time does kind of dilute the final product's poignancy and entertainment value, but that is mostly forgiven due to the fact that it's a story much too close to the debutant director's own upbringing in her family's traditional theater, and also because it happens to remain utterly moving. Films that deal with aging/old-age are always great to help put things in perspective.
