The Way Back

The Way Back ★★★½

Chances are, you're going to lose. Stop caring seems like a decent enough defense mechanism to keep the defeats from hurting as much, but the moment you do, it's also the moment any remote possibility of turning things around vanishes and feeling increasingly worse about yourself becomes routine. It's common wisdom/cornball masculine sentimentality, but it's the sort of thing everyone will need to hear at least once in their life and this project does a damn fine job in conveying just that. Genuinely great performance from Affleck, whose recent internet infamy evidently parallels his character's beats, so this works even better as a well-thought career move. (just not as good as starting to date Ana de Armas)
