Barbie 2023
Loved it. Does it demolish the patriarchy and capitalism? Oh no, of course not. But it focuses very much on the ways both function, imprint on us, and make themselves seem invisible and inevitable. That is no mean feat for a vehicle of popular entertainment paid for by a toy company.
Does it question heteronormativity? Not really, no. But it features John Cena as a mermaid/merman and refuses to let us define ourselves through love interests.
After seeing that, the grandiose 2001 opening and those dance numbers, I fully understand why Greta Gerwig agreed to make this movie. Beautiful, self-aware, very, very tongue-in-cheek. -

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer 2007
The first fifteen minutes alone are among the most cringeworthy in movie history. It doesn't really get any better.
