Rudis Muiznieks’s review published on Letterboxd:
Generic kids' movie with a generic plot and, other than being skinned as Nintendo icons, generic characters. There are a handful of things that adult fans of Mario games might enjoy but overall it's not for them. I think this was aimed more at recruiting a new generation of young Mario fans at the expense of entertaining those of us who have been there since the beginning.
Jack Black nearly lives up to the legendary Dennis Hopper performance as Bowser, but the 1993 film is still the gold standard in my opinion.
