Rue Lumbroso’s review published on Letterboxd:
The worst is always yet to come.
I had such high expectations for this film because of how incredibly exciting that first trailer was when it dropped and after everything I had read leading up to the release and I was not disappointed.
Heaven Knows What is ugly and nasty and very beautiful, it demands attention for every second between the opening and the frustrating, fantastic ending credits.
It's pretty much an instant indie classic and I say that without exaggeration.
With this the Safdie brothers join the ranks of artists like Harmony Korine and Gus Van Sant in his early years, a film that recalls KIDS and other landmarks of grime and honesty and this one won't be forgotten.
Easily in my top 5 for the year so far.
