Fear ★★★★

If this were a step more grounded in human behavioral tendencies, and maybe bolstered by stronger performances (although I think Wahlberg is pretty great in this; his smarm seems to come to him so naturally that his depiction of a psycho boyfriend is all the more believable in a film in which believability is in very short supply), then it could have been a classic of domestic abuse/familial struggle—imagine Cape Fear with Gavin Rossdale in lieu of Bernard Herrmann. Instead it is a remarkable piece of garbage, impressive in its cartoonish violence, cf. Wahlberg’s possessiveness characterized by the nanosecond it takes for him to leap out of his Corvair convertible and pulverize the guy that’s given his girlfriend an amicable hug.
