School of Rock ★★★★

To me this movie is two things: one, a demonstration of Richard Linklater’s appreciable faculties as a commercial filmmaker, and two, Jack Black in his most unadulterated form. The moment when he walks his class through the fundaments of “Smoke on the Water” he gets so caught up in the moment and thrashes out a Marty McFly-style anachronistic guitar solo that leaves his audience frozen as though they’re fumbling through their limited roster of emotional responses. They just sit there, awestruck, and it’s clear the response is genuine.
