To me I never understood why people liked cumbia music, much less am I fan of the genre (though Amor de Internet is a fucking jam) this movie never answers that for me but it doesn't have to. People just like shit for different reasons. This expression of joy for niche hobbies unravels how niche it is through the movie. First by having the American guy wanting to take a picture of his stylized haircut, but then to show that it's not just a Hispanic thing the Colombian woman later has no idea what the kid is going on about. Then finally this young naive American girl who actually engages with Ulises in learning about his life style is then just shown to have a shallow interest. If the first friendly face in a far off country spoke to me like I was Tarzan I'd feel disaffected too.
