  Given that this was made during Nagisa Oshima's "movies that can't be understood in 15 minutes" era I will reserve any further commentary until minute 16. But I don't feel optimistic that will help!

  Like 30% of this is a pretty good movie! Loved that final scene. As a whole, though, man, it's just not got enough goin' on.

  Hideaki Anno has written the second good superhero movie ever (after, of course, his own Cutie Honey). Absolutely incredible—I get why people who go in expecting some kind of subversion like Shin Godzilla might be disappointed by this being a very goofy and fun superhero movie, but those people are fools because it's still a superhero movie that puts all the weight on themes like Japan's ongoing relationship with the US military, or the underlying weird Christianity of Ultraman and…
