Wow. I did not expect this to be a perfect film. I didn't even expect to like it, based on the premise which I usually abhor. But this film transcends the usual trappings and repulsions of its sub genre through brutal, yet poetically fabled honesty.
As someone who typically doesnt appreciate this genre or culture (i.e. Girls, ugh!), this film treads a perfectly balanced line. It is the smartest and most self-aware film I have ever seen on the subject, which makes it so searingly honest and anthropological. It even has a happy ending which feels refreshingly uncynical.
Somewhat of a sub-genre masterpiece. Maybe Baumbach is finally about to enter a golden era in his career.
