I love seeing Jackie Chan in a role like this.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - there has never been and never will be another Jackie Chan.
During the film, my daughter was gasping, laughing, and saying things like “Oh no! Look out Sonic!” Then as soon as it ended she jumped up and said “look dad, I can run like Sonic!”... and started running around the theater.
So, for me, this was exactly what it should‘ve been. They captured my kid’s imagination and put a big smile on her face. Job well done. 👏🏻
This was an experience. Like Ari Aster’s films, Egger’s films sit with you, demanding multiple viewings.
It was poetic, brutal, gorgeous to look at, and has an Oscar level performance from Willem Dafoe. Good god was he amazing... Pattinson was fantastic as well of course.
So much to love here. Definitely won’t be for everyone. But thank the film gods A24 exists to make insane little films like this happen.
I’ll be thinking about this one for a while.
