2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey ★★★★★

"Open the pod bay doors, HAL."

This is without a doubt one of, if not, the hardest film to review.

I am completely perplexed. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a film truly like no other. Sure back in the 60's, it was the perfect film to trip on, and still is, but even then, audiences knew Kubrick had crafted something brilliant.

So like I said, reviewing this without saying anything that hasn't been said it impossible so I'll just share a personal thought of mine. I've seen this masterpiece three times over the years. My first viewing, I was 12 and thought it was incredibly boring but my dad made me watch it because it's one of his favorite films. I now see why. Then I watched it again last year. While I understood it more, I still found it slow and confusing.

Now I watched it last night and I was completely entranced. I'm so incredibly blown away and, of course, confused. While this was easily my best viewing yet, I feel like I'm still in search of the perfect viewing. Anyone understand what I mean? I love it so much but I still need to rewatch it for the "perfect" experience.

A friend of mine once said this to me. "I believe a film is a masterpiece if you can't stop thinking about it, even days later." 2001: A Space Odyssey is a masterpiece.
