Manchester by the Sea ★★★

Torn on this one. I really liked the dark comedy and the realistic depiction of grief and internal suffering. When something awful happens in our lives, we don't just have that moment happen in isolation - we still have to get breakfast, or adjust the air conditioning, or do something else mundane that becomes tragicomic, and this film gets that. However the flat realistic style of acting here feels like the wrong choice to me - Affleck's performance is so muted that it's hard to even register his character arc from the easygoing flashbacks. I also didn't like the pointless flashbacks that weren't from any perspective, it felt they simplified a story that was straightforward enough as is. Good movie but disappointing given the pedigree and reputation
