Lady Bird

Lady Bird ★★★★★

I’ve seen this movie six times now, and every time I discover something new to laugh at, and something new to break my heart.

Today, this line in that perfect final sequence stuck out to me:

“I love you. Thank you. I’m... Thank you.”

She doesn’t finish her thought when she’s about to apologize. She doesn’t need to. Although her decisions are often selfish and destructive, Lady Bird’s world is larger, and arguably better than it could’ve ever been. And that is something to be grateful for, not something to be ashamed of.

I had a similar conversation with my mother today, and I don’t think I’m necessarily sorry for wanting more, or at least not as sorry as I was. All I can do is thank her for giving all of herself to build me the life that I want. And although I will never fully be able to repay her for it, I’m sure as hell gonna try.
