Victoria ★★★★

Watched this film right after Richard Linklater's Slacker.

Slacker made me wonder why I didn't interact with strangers more often. And then Victoria made me never want to fucking get involved with a stranger ever again.

Still feeling the whiplash, otherwise I liked this film a lot. The first act takes a bit of getting used to and drags its feet a little in the substance department, but the payoff is worth the wait. This is a very tense film.

Roger Ebert said about Alexander Sokurov's Russian Ark that every edit wakens us from the dreamlike nature of film. It's for this reason I refuse to see a one-take idea as a gimmick and more a philosophy of filmmaking. And the fact a two-hour thriller is filmed in literally a single take is a technical accomplishment that can't be understated. Russian Ark is one of my all time favorite films, and though Victoria doesn't have near that kind of immensity and beauty to me, it's a solid film.
