    Ready Player One

I've considered myself a geek for pretty much as long as I can remember, and watching this movie is the closest I've ever come to feeling embarrased about it.

Brandon Victor Dixon is so good as Judas. So good.

  • Tomb Raider

    Tomb Raider

It's a slightly above average action movie...but an excellent video game movie (granted, the bar has been set extremely low). Alicia Vikander is by far the best live action Lara Croft that we've had yet (again, the bar has not been set high). I would have liked Lara Croft to have more agency; pretty much everything in this movie is driven by Richard Croft's actions, while in the games Lara is actually interested in the things that she investigates. Anyway,…

Came for the visuals, stayed for the story.

    Thor: Ragnarok

Not the deepest or the most innovative MCU movie, but by far the funniest.

It's Only the End of the World

    Ridiculously self-indulgent...but it works.

    Blade Runner 2049

This movie is a goddamn masterpiece and I already know it's going to be one of my all-time favourites. Everything but the music is as good or better than the original (seriously, they couldn't give Vangelis a call? It's not like the dude is dead). Denis Villeneuve has never made a bad movie and I'm starting a riot if this doesn't get Roger Deakins his Oscar. I don't know if it's going to be very popular but I hope it makes a lot of money because we could definitely use more smart, big-budget sci-fi that genuinely asks questions of the audience.

    The Foreigner

I expected "Taken, but with Jackie Chan" and I got something much better. It's a decent conspiracy thriller with a plot that is a bit of a mess but the action is great. Jackie Chan (in a role that's completely devoid of any comedy) and Pierce Brosnan both have great performances. Excellent Cliff Martinez score too, although somewhat similar to the work he did on The Knick.

    The LEGO Ninjago Movie

I've never seen any other Ninjago thing but this is pretty good. You can tell how much fun the voice actors were having - particularly Justin Theroux.

This also has a cat kaiju (catju?) named Meowthra and a reference to the Tom Hardy movie Locke. So there's no way I *wasn't* going to like it.

    Kingsman: The Golden Circle

It’s a lot of fun but terribly unoriginal. There is literally nothing it does better than the first. It’s like someone made a list of things people liked about Kingsman: TSS and made a few changes. At least the cast is used well and the action is good.

Deserves an extra half star for that Winds of Winter joke alone.
