Mainly giving five star ratings to two star giallo films
Despite hitting so many essential notes of the genre, I can’t put my finger on it exactly, but this feels sort of lifeless. Even its attempts at sleaze and violence feel phoned in. Even performances from giallo mainstays such as Nieves Navarro/Susan Scott feel phoned in until the climactic greenhouse scene. Unfortunately it never really rises above that middle ground but still satisfies fans of the genre.
From the same director as the Blood Spattered Bride comes this woozy extremely slow moving beautifully dreamy Euro art house mystery with some giallo-adjacent vibes. Despite the nature of the mystery unraveling at a snail’s pace with an overly convoluted plot, I was enraptured the entire time. I could swim in these over saturated colors, Capucine’s stoic bad ass revenge face, and the score for days. Really really dug this.

My favorite of the giallo-esque Fulci films and a contender for my favorite Fulci film behind The Beyond. Also this has one of my favorite soundtracks ever. The structure for this is just so perfectly executed. It makes you the viewer think Virginia is attempting to unravel a past murder mystery through her visions until each reveal slowly exposes that we are actually unraveling something from the future, and when this happens the tension ramps up to unbearable territories and it is far more horrifying than originally thought. Beyond that every single one of Jennifer O’Neill’s outfits is incredible 😂
