Decided to finally watch after Ari Aster cited as an influence on Midsommar, which I’m watching tomorrow.
Powell & Pressburger are masters when it comes to color & framing, this movie is a visual feast. Black Narcissus follows a group of British nuns who set up a convent in the palace a Himalayan general built for his mistresses. A dramatic and lavish juxtaposition of the sacred & the profane, and how they both play into the orientalist fetishes of a crumbling empire. A suspenseful, well-acted, gorgeous masterpiece (with unfortunately quite a bit of brownface, it was the 40’s after all.)
