Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten

    ★★½

    i don’t know
usually films about the punk scene make me feel sad i wasn’t alive then but i watched this in a bad mood and felt sad that he was a bully and quite mean and aloof but it’s ok cos he’s a genius or something. i’m glad it didn’t gloss over his actions but it put me into a spiral of thinking about the necessity of mythologising cruelty and my own existential doubt about how you must act if you want to ‘make it’

(though maybe this attitude to breaking through is part of the clash’s/punk’s legacy)

also amazing animations and drawings at the beginning

  • Eden Lake

    Eden Lake

    ★★

eden lake presents the northern working class as gratuitously vicious, remorseless criminals in comparison to the heroes, a nice middle class couple holidaying at "Eden" Lake. stereotyping not just a few characters but a whole group of people, the couple are reminded of this division at every opportunity throughout the film.

this film is tense and brutal but the representation throughout leaves me wondering what the motivation is here. a satire of society or a display of unconscious bias?

    very similar to Elf (2003)

  • The Kitchen

    The Kitchen

    ★★½

this was pretty much as good as any crime-family film i’ve seen, but the story has way more potential for depth and excitement than was delivered.

also due to having subtitles on i realised baa baa black sheep and twinkle twinkle little star have the same tune

  • What Keeps You Alive

    What Keeps You Alive

    ★★

SO many missed opportunities, such a pointless last 20 mins, weirdly paced/developed, but a fun time and at least we weren’t cringing from misogyny

  • Promising Young Woman

    Promising Young Woman

    ★★★★★

really satisfying in a thelma and louise kinda way, plus a really nuanced understanding of feminist anger, fear, and ambivalence in woman-man relationships and interactions.
