still can't get over how the guardian review on the miff website labelled this as a 'cheese-dream'. just say you hate the french and go! serra certainly did. i think there's only so much space in my heart for colonial purgatory and meandering banality of evil at 9 pm on a weeknight, but the intoxicating, gradually abstracting imagery is nearly impossible to shake.

My Best Friend's Wedding 1997
a fascinating tonal balancing act, bridging the '90s rom com with the more naturalistic sensibilities of the' 70s rom com - the presence of joan micklin silver feels pronounced here. kinda makes you ache for the time when care was put into how these movies felt and looked; will be thinking about that boat sequence forever, and how we desperately need to bring the split diopter back to rom coms
