• Top Gun: Maverick

    Top Gun: Maverick

the best way i can describe this film is as a nicholas sparks movie that has a dogfight scene. i found myself laughing at the sentimental moments, and just could not seem to connect with any part of anything in the movie. i was impressed with the plane stuff and definitely found the dogfight compelling, but i kept trying to figure out what i was missing because this one has received so much love. maybe marvel has just lowered the…

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi

    Obi-Wan Kenobi

one of the better pieces of content from the disney star wars, i think. still not sure if i like that they’re continuing to make anything new, but i do love ewan mcgregor so much.

  • Hustle

weird that pretty much the entire cast except for adam sandler and queen latifah are NBA stars. also i recommend this movie if late-90s and early-2000s family movies are enjoyable to you. it has the formula for those, and somehow i am a bit of a sucker for it.

  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

a beautiful and substantive movie that also has some ridiculously good fight scenes. it touched my childhood martial artist heart.

  • American Factory

    American Factory

really loved the way this gets at the unique difficulties of working class life in a globalized economy. lots of really great footage. and i have my own relationship to the factory as i used to drive by it regularly as a child. the ending slides focused in on automation, which seemed out of left field to me. i really wish it had ended by taking a stronger stand or clearer focus on labor conditions.

  • The Last Duel

    The Last Duel

this will now be my favorite movie from the “multiple-vantage” genre which i actually mostly dislike. but this one worked quite well. big fan.

  • Arrival

revisited for the third or fourth time and it still had a potency, which i didn’t expect. really beautifully made film as long as you kind of forgo some of its technicalities.

  • The Northman

    The Northman

    very beautiful. incredibly freudian.

  • The Parallax View

    The Parallax View

watched for class. conspiracy films are very weird to watch in the contemporary moment. overall, didn’t enjoy this totally but still found parts of it really fascinating and captivating.

  • C'mon C'mon

    C'mon C'mon

holds up in every way. a masterpiece.

  • Juno

still the perfect coming of age movie and everything else is just trying to keep up.

  • Everything Everywhere All at Once

    Everything Everywhere All at Once

hot dog fingers and an everything bagel. this is a movie about food.
