Extremely well made, as you can expect from an Ang Lee movie. The middle part, that both cranks up the "Those kids are irreparably damaged, but to you assholes they are just dancing monkeys" satire and the "Will they break?" tension, is definitely the best part.
But the rest suffers both from a slow burn, that hints at a big payoff that never comes, and the typical "Oh my god, life as a soldier is awful, can we stop glorifying it please, but these guys are heroes, so hooray for them, going back to war, soldiers are the greatest!" mixed message, that so many modern war movies have.
