They really don't make 'em like this anymore. Too bad. When people talk about "old school horror", they always mean slasher movies, but the FX heavy fantasy horror with monsters or mutants is something that I really miss since the 90s.
This here is one of my favourites. Yeah, it suffers a bit from the high expectations that come with the TFTC brand (big Hollywood stars, dark humored plot twists, etc), but it's entertaining, gory, looks stunning for a movie that takes place in a dark and dirty house and has a strong cast full of well known faces and reliable character actors, with an incredible performance by Billy Zane. He convinces as smooth talking seducer, scary villain and Freddy-esque clown.
It won't scare you to death, it's not a movie that young indie directors gonna rip off, but it's a lot of horror fun, that has aged really well.
