Occurred to me this time that I like the movie so much not because it's a musical, but because it's actually just a romantic dramedy - with musical numbers. The dinner table fight (maybe my favorite scene in the film) is just as important as the sequence at the observatory.
Having just re-watched Singin in the Rain a couple nights ago, I was a little less forgiving of Stone and Gosling's dance numbers. But it struck me that the choreography in their scenes together (which is charming and fun) is the equivalent of rubbing a few sticks together to get the fire started again. Maybe in a decade or so we'll have another Astaire and Rogers. We can hope.
