It works because it mixes things up in ways that keeps you glue to your sit. It has Miles's arc to become more confident, something that we have seen before, but thanks to the character being likable and the message coming of as sincere its never trite, plus the movie is really fun, and takes all the advantages of being animated to not only look fucking beautiful, but also to make it feel like a comic book , have fun with some moments and details, and just go fucking insane with the action, specially the scale of it, is always going bigger and bigger, hell near the end it gets a bit too much at times, which is not a bad issue to have with a movie this good looking.
It also has fun adding all kind of new things to the story and mythos that we haven't really seen before in a Spider Man movie, is always open to have fun, but it can also go dark quite easily not being afraid to kill characters. And it does it in a way that doesn't clash with the tone of the movie but adds to the weight of the worlds they are creating, one that is beautiful, fun as hell but also with real danger and consequences, all put together with really great acting and a lot of fucking heart.
