Ju-on: The Curse 2000
The Ju-On films are considered the weakest of the Asian horror franchises (it doesn’t have any of the thematic richness or interesting mythology of the other series’), and especially this entry which is basically a student film shot for insanely cheap. But I find the craftsmanship, editing and pacing of the scares to be exceptional. This looks like it was shot on a video camera, the sound recording is terrible and some of the effects work is sub-PlayStation 1, but I was genuinely frightened by it. It’s up for free on YouTube and I’d really recommend it if you can get past how cheap it looks.
