"Bernie, there really aren't any bears up there, are there?" says the actor who would go on to play the lead in Girls Nite Out, a slasher film featuring a homicidal bear mascot.
He Knows You're Alone was made before the genre became totally appropriated by teenagers. I sometimes feel the trivialities of young adults don't add any extra weight to a film's terror. Movies like this—or Black Christmas, or Night School, or Don't Answer the Phone—are all the more distressing when they involve adult themes like marriage, infidelity, abortion, alcoholism, or trauma. And if they're also fun to watch then, hey, you've got yourself a winner.
A classic from its era. With Tom Hanks.
