how can i even approach a film like this?
i’ve racked my brain for a while now trying to come up with an explanation for why this film affected me so deeply.
i understand it can seem amateurish, contradictory, even self-destructive at times; but it’s these elements which drive my fascination even further.
it is a film perpetually at odds with itself, a work of art just as conflicted over its own identity as it’s protagonist (and filmmaker).

there’s one very inspired image in this and a handful of fun line readings but WOW, for a movie trying to recapture the spirit of 70s b-movies this could not feel any more like a mid-2000s studio horror flick!

    The Assignment

the poor handling of transness in this movie isn’t even interesting enough for me to engage analytically with. it hardly even feels like a trans film at all! like what’s the point of making a force-fem-revenge action flick if you can’t even commit to the absurdity/beauty of a force-fem revenge story? it’s all just so dull!!! UGH!

i have simply forgotten how to be loved.” — The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer.

(fair warning, this is very long and ramble-y and not really a review as much as me working through some trauma, so be prepared.)

to start things off, my name is anastasia, and i am nineteen years old. i am a transgender woman, and have been on hormones for three months now.
i am not yet at the point where i have come out to everyone…

hyper-masculinity lies at the very core of fascism…
but it’s also gay as hell.
