My review of Lux Aeterna and The Art of Filmmaking from March 12th 2021, before this was on LB:

Lux Aeterna (3/5) - I loved the first 5-10 minutes of this where Charlotte Gainsbourg and Beatrice Dalle are just talking about their lives as actresses. It was very interesting and I believed every second of it. After that, we realize that they're on a shoot, Beatrice is the director, and everything is going to shit. From this point on, I…

Shooting this on 16mm was a fantastic choice. It gives the film a unique texture that can't be captured digitally. Those images of New York, the Sun tarot card, etc. are all much more impactful and creepy because it's shot on film. And it has an interesting contrast to the famous drone images of St. James Island that are featured in the film and the very online nature of the Epstein conspiracy in general.

Dasha also leaves enough for the…

I love the inclusion of the Gordy flashbacks and how they reinforce the themes about the brutality of the natural world. To me this is a classic horror film about predator and prey. Hunter and hunted. I didn’t think about the potential colonialism analogy until reading other reviews here but that’s the beauty of cinema and hearing other people’s interpretations.

Nope is incredibly well shot and deliberately paced. Several scenes that are truly disturbing and the alien design is fantastic. Jordan…

I liked all the parts with the actual penguins. The rest of the movie was pretty mid imo

    Dragged Across Concrete

This movie actually dogwhistles the insane conspiracy theory that Jewish people (aka "globalists") run world finance. And not from the perspective of the characters, but from the perspective of the narrative, and therefore the perspective of Zahler. This movie's ideological point-of-view is shockingly far-right. Also, the women have no character beyond creating melodramatic and cliched backstories for the male leads. It also tries to justify police brutality by essentially presenting a straw man argument. Aside from those horrific things (and…

Cult Movie Challenge Week 2: Gothic Horror Week

*I watched the German-language version of the film.

I liked the second half of the film much more than the first half. Some bits are quite stagey and unconvincing, especially towards the beginning, but overall I thought the film was pretty creepy, particularly in the second half when it becomes a bit more surreal and even has a bit of Herzog's weird comedic tone at times. I think Isabelle Adjani's character is…
