Scarlett Worthington’s review published on Letterboxd:
This was a trip I wasn’t expecting. An abnormal, teen angst ridden flick which really gets you thinking about perplexing things. Deeply complex ideas hidden in the facade of a teen flick this is a perfect blend for me.
Seeping with ambiguity, I know this is something I want to watch again to get different perspectives on.
Not only is it deeply layered however, it has an incredibly fitting soundtrack, an amazing lead performance from Jake Gyllenhaal and commendable performances from the supporting cast, interesting visuals and to be honest a fairly decent script. A powerhouse of a film to put it into words.
Side note: in talking about this film Jake Gyllenhaal said his Dad told him “the job of art is to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed”. That stuck with me. Also let’s just say I felt quite comforted by this film.
