I was white-knuckled with doubt 'till the end about what Charlie would do the performance by Joséphine Japy was so well nuanced. Her fixation Sarah (Lou de Laâge) while she's the quintessential mean girl is far from a one-note character. Realizing too late what she's stoked in Charlie, an uneasy desperation builds in her as she fights internally to maintain her cool and not expose her panic to her quiet, vulnerable and sometimes melancholy peer. The actresses contrast and play well off each other. Brilliant directing/writing by Mélanie Laurent. This has fantastic cinematography too.

A flick with a message whose delivery in Greta Gerwig and crew's hands is in no way tired, with wonderful performances that avoided to me the pitfall of being bit-ish as in some other coming of age tales. The message is that even if it takes distance and or time, insight about what beauty was always there in ones circumstances will come however bleak etc. they were back when.

    > Three Bs is my introduction to Martin McDonagh. The gist of the knocks against this flick seem to me to about about the eccentric mix of characters making the tone yo-yo about. With the exception of Samara Weaving's character who did largely seem shoehorned in for one reason I wasn't taken out of the story by any of them.
