Sam Connon’s review published on Letterboxd:
Hereditary may be one of the first true horror movies I’ve ever seen.
It’s not perfect, but I am glad I saw it.
First and foremost, it’s scary. Sometimes the scares come from the tension, sometimes they come from the visuals, but they’re consistent and well done.
It’s a very well-made film and it just looks great. From editing to score to cinematography, I loved it. It got weird and it went all-in, and I really appreciated that. The end actually gave me goosebumps. Not because I loved it necessarily, but it was just really...I’m not even sure what to call it, honestly.
However, the characters are kinda one-note and cliché, and a lot of the story beats are basically what you’d expect for a exorcism-based horror movie. The grandma and her whole storyline is basically pointless and we really aren’t given enough information to put the pieces together. There are times when we don’t see something important happen, so it’s hard to tell who is who and what is what.
Hereditary was a fun watch though. I got pretty squeamish and I was cringing for maybe half the movie, but overall, it was a good time.
