Haven't done a review in ages, but this was my most anticipated film of 2013, and as it stands thus far, is my favorite of the year.
When the Coens are at their best, you're hard pressed to find many better filmmakers working right now, and this is them at their best. Where it exactly ranks among their best films, is something to consider another day, but it's right up there near the top.
Even as someone who loves period pieces to seemingly no end, they're almost starting to wear out their welcome in Hollywood these days. But this is the kind that reminds me why I love them. You feel immersed in a different world, even as simple a world it may be. Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan have the best onscreen chemistry (best bad chemistry?) all year, and John Goodman is great, as usual, in his role.
