Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island ★★★

Prettier than your average blockbuster for sure. Too bad none of the characters register. I get the "arc" of Kong as the big bad who becomes a big good, but that's really more of a misunderstanding than an arc. And while Samuel L. Jackson's character is well established in the beginning of the story, his development is left in the hands of other characters who are forced to repeatedly point out that he's "slipping". I know nothing about the development of this picture, but it feels like a lot was left on the cutting room floor. John C. Reilly is delightful though, and Shea Whigham brings a lot of texture to what would otherwise be a background character. And it *is* pretty.
