Pokémon Detective Pikachu ★★

If this movie weren’t about Ryan Reynolds and Pokémon, I’d probably hate it. The entire thing is just a big exposition dump, to the point that the father/son connection barely lands at all because the dialogue is too preoccupied with pushing the plot forward—maybe it’s just me and my not-so-secret dream of being a journalist, but Kathryn Newton’s side-arc is more effective than the central emotional content. But give me a coffee-addled Reynolds-Pikachu and an Exploud dubstep dance party (and maybe some half-hearted jabs at corporate America), and my critical faculties fly right out the window like a Pidgeotto chasing level 36.
