ScreeningNotes’s review published on Letterboxd:
Happy July everyone! This month's longform essay is going to be on Southland Tales. I'm very intimidated by this one because I'm trying to use it as a way to start writing the other half of my ongoing thesis-project-thing that has until now focused entirely on Italian genre film and will now partially transition into American genre film. I don't plan to go as deep or as long with American genre film as I have with Italian cinema, and I plan to return / remain with Italian cinema as I expand my scope, but the whole project is still taking shape and honestly who knows what it's going to look like in another month or two.
Special thanks to my patrons and to everyone who's shared their enthusiasm for these behemoths I've been writing and for all the time I've spent watching this obscure nonsense — the obscurity of what I'm watching should change as I transition into American pop cinema, but the dry historical analysis will never die. Wish me luck writing about this incredibly weird movie; I'm going to need it. Expect to see whatever I manage to churn out on Patreon around the middle of the month and here on Letterboxd by the end of July. Thanks again, and all my love to all y'all movie nerds!! ❤️❤️❤️
