Upgrade ★★★

You've seen the characters and their arcs before, but the way Logan Marshall-Green plays the semi-willing host to a computer chip that's turning him from Joe Blow car mechanic into Jason Bourne action hero with equal parts surprise, horror, and occasionally disgust while performing these incredible fight scenes is worth the price of admission by itself. I'm not super convinced there's much in here thematically in the way of questioning human agency in a world of ever-more-powerful computers, but it's at least something to think about. I'm almost more intrigued by the movie as a metaphor for violent movie audiences: we encourage the chip–movie to show us these abhorrent acts that definitely thrill us on one level, but if ever witnessed in real life would likely lead to surprise, horror, and probably disgust
