  • A Serbian Film

    A Serbian Film

shock cinema is something that’s often debated as, β€œwhen does it work as art, and where does it draw the line.” to me, there are plenty of films out there that contain shocking and controversial material, all while making it work as a sole piece of art in itself. take pink flamingoes for example, it’s a disgusting and shocking film, but it works. it’s still a film i admire as an art in itself.Β

a serbian film does not fall…

    β€œyou were afraid.”

this is another perfect example of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. last year at marienbad’s aesthetic and atmosphere is dreamlike and it borders a fairytale-ish persona, yet beneath that faΓ§ade, the plot’s thrill amidst its mystery can indicate many things, but many sequences and episodes within the picture hint at darker subjects that propose the idea of anything but romance.Β

the film itself is a surrealist classic, and its openness to multiple interpretations is what makes it…

    The Sword of Doom

gripping, intense, horrifying, bleak, and mysterious beyond comprehension. tatsuya nakadai gives not only one of his best performances of all time, but one of the best performances of all time as the film’s cunning protagonist. his expressions alone play a major role in carrying the film, as his stoic, cold exterior taunts and chills the audience to the bone, often playing with our anticipation and proceeding to strike horror within us whenever he flashes a devious smile.

while some elements of this film are definitely questionable and are of ill taste, i honestly feel like this movie had good intentions, yet just exhibited those intentions in a way that wasn’t exactly 100% morally correct.

on one hand, belladonna of sadnessΒ is a film that romanticizes rape and creates it into an aesthetic of sorts for the naked eye. the rape scenes definitely were difficult to watch, but the surrealist nature seemed to create it into something that attempted…
