Part 7 of my "THIS...IS WRESTLEMANIA!!!" marathon
Oh God. This film makes no sense but...I find it...so captivating.
There is a line in the film "This is a very ambitious business model", which I find sums up 'Southland Tales'. It has a lot to say, too much perhaps, even for it's 2 1/2 hour runtime. But if I were offered either an ambitious failure or a bland MORathon, give me the crazy bowl of bullshit please. With sugar on top.
The film reminds me of the classic British comedy sketch from Morecambe and Wise featuring musical maestro Andre Previn " I'm playing all the right notes. Just not necessarily in the right order". I mean this is a complete mindfuck. It's like P T Anderson meets Paul Verhoeven meets a bucket of drugs.
Having said all that, I kinda find 'Southland Tales' enjoyable - for my sins - and I'm going to give it a score it probably doesn't deserve. It's an example of glorious failure, and I can't help but respect it for that.
