The Abyss ★★★★

Now here is a classic science fiction movie from James Cameron before he really got carried away with a fascination with integrating computer-generated special effects into just about every single camera shot possible to convey a story. It is true this movie was extremely innovative with computer-generated animation that was utilized as the primary tool for the visual effects that designed the humanoid face in the water bubble, but it is nothing compared to the heavy reliance upon computer-generated animation that was heavily used twenty years later for his film Avatar (2009). Anyway, what I am trying to say here would my personal preference for live-action movies like The Abyss where the movie production was produced with practical or mechanical effects as the predominant aspect over the utility of computer-generated effects any given day of the week.
